GUALTIERI - CONCHOLOGY: TESTAE TERRESTRES SHELL print 1742

£135.00

This very striking and highly decorative first edition folio shell engraving, with beautiful professional later hand colouring, is from Niccolò Gualtieri's, "Index Testarum Conchyliorum quae adservantur in Museo Nicolai Gualtieri”“List of the shells of shellfish which are preserved in the Museum of Niccolò Gualtieri” - published in Florence by Caietani Albizzini in 1742.

Niccolò Gualtieri (1688 – 1744) was an Italian physician, naturalist, and professor at the University of Pisa.  Many of the images in this edition were from his personal and renowned cabinet collection of shells.  The beautiful plates were engraved by Antonio Pazzi from original drawings by Giuseppe Menabuoni.

The "Index Testarum Conchyliorum" one of the pioneering books about conchology, is distinguished for its bold engravings..."
