ORVIS - SALMON FLIES - plate (B) fishing print
Illustrated: Silver Doctor, Kennedy, Harlequin, Mitchell, Inver Green, Blue Doctor
These rare original chromolithographs, beautifully illustrating nearly three hundred Salmon, Trout, Lake & Bass fly patterns, are from the 1892 and 1896 editions of the classic angling book, “Favorite Flies and Their Histories” by Mary Orvis Marbury.
Mary Marbury was the daughter of Charles F. Orvis who founded the world-renowned Orvis fishing company in Vermont in 1856. She was an expert flytier and at the age of twenty, headed the company’s fly tying department.
With information gathered from more than two hundred experienced anglers across the United States and Canada, Mary detailed the stories, histories, and appearances of some of the most coveted and successful flies in angling.
“The legacy of Mary Marbury, through her book and her leadership in Orvis's commercial fly-tying operation, is the standardization of American fly patterns. Her book Favorite Flies and Their Histories, remains one of the most significant landmarks in American fly tying literature.” The Mary Orvis Marbury Fly Plates - The American Flyfisher 1979.
All the British and American classics are here, including the Jock Scott, Thunder and Lightning and Durham Ranger salmon flies, Halfords’s dry flies, flies from Caithness to Cornwall, flies for the Adirondacks, the Pacific slope, Colorado, Montana…and many, many more.
These exquisite plates with protective tissue guards still attached, and some heightened with gold and silver, will enhance any room in your home, office or club for years to come.
