DIDEROT/GROUSSIER & BERNARD: “PÊCHES DE MER” – SEA FISHING print 1771

£45.00

This very attractive copper plate engraving of various sea fishing scenes, with fine recent professional hand colouring, was drawn by Groussier and engraved by Bernard for Denis Diderot’s, “Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers,” (Encyclopedia, or Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts and Crafts), published in Paris in 1771.

“The Encyclopédie turned craftsmanship from lore to science and promoted the concept of uniform industrial method to be adopted by all producers…its aim was the easing of labor, its liberation from routine, and the summons to pride in its enlightenment.”
