MERIAN & JONSTON - STURGEON, PUFFERFISH, BOXFISH - COPPERPLATE 1657

£80.00

These finely detailed seventeenth century fish engravings by Merian and Jonston beautifully display a wide variety of game, fresh and saltwater species.

Jonston’s writings were ahead of his predecessors and some of his contemporaries, and his work on fishes was exceptionally good for its time”.

Joannes Jonstonus – Jonston/Johnston (1603 – 1675) was a well-travelled and prolific writer on natural history, and published numerous works, including "Historia naturalis" in Frankfurt, Germany, from 1646 to 1662.

The seven parts in folio covered birds, quadrupeds, insects, plants, aquatic animals, fishes and cetaceans. The wonderful copperplates offered here are from the second edition published in Amsterdam in 1657, and were engraved by Matthaus Merian.
