These highly decorative and very beautiful copper engravings of tropical saltwater fish by Jacob Van der Schley (Amsterdam, 1715 – 1779) are from the rare and most desired volume of Abbé Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles “Histoire Générale Des Voyages," which includes the exquisite section on “Poissons; extraordinaires d’Amboine” - “The Extraordinary Fishes of Ambon.”  Published in 1763.

Originally printed in b/w, these 53 superbly handcoloured plates illustrate 477 different species that inhabit the waters of Indonesia.
