RICHARDSON - LANCETFISH SKULL & LONG-SNOUT BOARFISH print ( Alepisaurus & Histiopterus recurvirostris)
With fine later handcolouring, this beautiful and very rare plate of a lancertfish skull & long-snout boarfish is from the "Fishes" report of the Voyage of H.M.S Erebus& Terror during the years 1839 & 1843 by leading ichthyologist, naturalist and Arctic explorer, Sir John Richardson (1787 -1865)
"In no expedition that ever sailed from Europe has more care been taken to collect the zoological productions of the sea, than in the pre-eminently scientific one of the Erebus and Terror...ample collections of fish were made at New Zealand, Australia, Cape Horn, the Falklands, and whenever the opportunity offered of drawing the seine or trawl, or dropping the hook"
Sir John Richardson
"This report is distinguished as one of the most important zoological studies from the classical era of Antarctic exploration.”
