This very fine engraving by Samuel Davenport of a Mackerel, Tunney, Salmon &Trout, is from an abridged new edition of Buffon's "Natural History" by the Rev. William Hutton. Published in London in 1821.

George Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon (1707 - 1788), was a French naturalist and philosopher, and member of the most learned societies of Europe.

Buffon’s “Histoire naturelle”, was originally published in Paris in forty-four quarto volumes between 1749 - 1804, and was the first work to present the previously isolated and disconnected facts of natural history in a popular and intelligible form.
