This very striking original 1768 folio plate of marine life, encronite - fossils - minerals, is from "Histoire naturelle – Suite du règne animal," (Natural History - Animal Kingdom) plate volume 6 of “The Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers.” (Encyclopaedia, or “rational dictionary” of the Sciences, Arts, and Crafts).

By De La Rue and engraved by Robert Bénard, with fine recent professional hand colouring.

This highly popular and significant work was published in France under the direction of philosopher, writer and chief editor, Denis Diderot, and distinguished mathematician and co-editor, Jean le Rond D’Alembert, between 1751 and 1772.
