SEBA TAB XVI. MARINE LIFE: COMMON GOOSE BARNACLES, LAMPSHELL, CLAM, SEA PEN shell print 1735
This beautiful original rare Seba double page engraving of marine life, with fine later professional hand colouring, was published in Holland in 1735.
Albertus Seba (1665 - 1736) was a wealthy pharmacist based in Amsterdam, who over the years amassed an amazing array of exotic plants, corals, birds, fish, insects and animals from around the world.
This extraordinary assemblage was known as his “Cabinet of Natural Curiosities” and his thesaurus, "Locupletissimi rerum naturalium", based on this collection, was published in Amsterdam by J. Weststen, William Smith, and Jansson-Waesburg between 1734 and 1769.
Today, these unique copperplate engravings are both aesthetically appealing and highly desirable.
