EMERTON: THE AMERICAN LOBSTER print 1884
This beautiful engraving of an American Lobster, is from the beautifully illustrated and historically important "Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States," a multi-volume enterprise published by the U.S. Fish Commission from 1884 - 1887.
The renowned ichthyologist, George Brown Goode, headed a large scientific team to research and write this work, describing marine life and their life histories, fishing equipment and methods, fisheries statistics, and fish culture and propagation.
With fine recent professional handcolouring, this superbly detailed drawing by J. H. Emerton was from a specimen obtained at Eastport, Me., in 1882.
