VERNET: LES PECHEURS DES MONTS PYRENEES - THE FISHERMEN OF THE PYRENEES - fishing print 1790
This beautiful rare copperplate engraving, with very fine professional hand colouring, is after the original painting, "Les Pecheurs des Monts Pyrenees" - The Fishermen of the Pyrenees - by one of the leading French landscape and marine artists of his time, Claude-Joseph Vernet, (Avignon 1714 – Paris 1789).
Vernet studied classical landscapes in Rome between 1734 and 1752, where he was influenced by the contemporary Roman topographical painter, Giovanni Paolo Panini, and the dramatic paintings of Salvator Rosa, and Claude.
Vernet became a member of the French Royal Academy and was known for his landscapes, harmony, use of light and atmosphere. In 1753, he received a royal commission from King Louis XV for a series of paintings representing the fifteen ports of France.
