YELLOWTAIL ANGELFISH, SPOTTED SCAT, ORB, SICKLEFISH & SPOTTED ARCHERFISH print

£85.00

Francis Day (1829-1889) was one of Britain’s leading ichthyologists and the Inspector-General of Fisheries in India from 1871. He produced several major works on the ichthyology of this country, including the monumental Fishes of India, a natural history of the fishes known to inhabit the seas and fresh water of India, Burma, and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Published 1875 – 78, plate volume 1899.

Day had wanted 20 copies of the Fishes of India to be coloured, but due to time, expense and over a thousand figures, this was abandoned. Today, these extremely rare, and strikingly beautiful nineteenth century engravings, have been masterfully hand painted by one of the few remaining professional colourists in the United Kingdom specialising in fish.
