These beautiful fish engravings, with original handcolouring and gum Arabic, are from Lacépède’s “Histoire naturelle des poissons” published in Paris from 1798 through to the late 1800s.

Bernard Germain Etienne de La Ville, the compte de Lacépède (France 1756 – 1826) was a distinguished naturalist who became the curator of the king’s cabinet in 1785 and professor of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in 1795.

Lacépède was also a writer of great eloquence and a man of boundless benevolence, who published works on music, science, and the natural history of quadrupeds, snakes, fishes and whales.
