These magnificent coloured wood engravings are from the first edition of the classic “British Freshwater Fishes” by naturalist, Rev. William Houghton.

“I have to thank the artist for the care he has bestowed on the drawings, which I think cannot fail to give satisfaction both as regards accuracy and artistic effect.”

The illustrations were superbly drawn from nature by watercolour artist, Alexandra Francis Lydon, and produced by Benjamin Fawcett, one of the country’s finest nineteenth century colour printers. Their famous collaboration, lasting over 30 years, resulted in illustrating many memorable natural history works including the beautiful plates for Couch’s “A History of British Fishes.”

These highly attractive fish prints, portrayed in a naturalistic setting, are accompanied where available by a separate chapter of Houghton’s text containing a striking scenic steel engraving of areas where the fish are located. (Ref. Dean, Bibl. of Fishes vol.1, p 605; Wood 1931, p 391)
